(BOISE) – Democratic lawmakers are holding a public hearing in Boise today to discuss a proposed tobacco tax. The bill would raise the price of each pack of cigarettes by 68 cents. Republicans in opposition to the bill, including Idaho Falls Rep. Eric Simpson of Idaho Falls, say the state needs to live within its means rather than by raising taxes. Supporters, which include Pocatello Democrat Elaine Smith, say the state education budget could benefit from a tax increase. The hearing begins this afternoon at 4:30 in the capitol.
