A Mother Bear Attacked and Killed a Hiker

UPDATED: Yellowstone National Park officials have released the name of a hiker killed by a grizzly bear Wednesday morning. 57-year-old Brian Matayoshi of Torrance, California was killed after stumbling across a female grizzly and her two cubs. Matayoshi was on his fourth trip to Yellowstone when the accident happened. His wife Maureen says they were not carrying bear spray. Park officials say will not take action against the bear, but are monitoring the area to prevent any further incidents.

7.7.2011 – Yellowstone National Park officials say a hiker was mauled to death by a grizzly bear near Canyon Village Wednesday morning. The victim’s wife says they inadvertently surprised a female grizzly and her two cubs while hiking on a trail near the center of the park. The victim’s name and other information will be released later today. Park officials are clearing all backcountry trails and campsites around the area until further notice. No action has been taken against the bear.
