Areva - France's nuclear reactor maker

UPDATED: Areva argued its case before the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Tuesday. Before the board can approve Areva’s plan to build a $3 billion uranium enrichment facility, they must first review an environmental impact study. Environmentalists are concerned about a long-term nuclear storage facility being built on top of the Snake River Aquifer. The board is expected to make a final decision by September. Areva is one step closer to starting it’s $3 billion project near Idaho Falls. Local News 8 reports that a public meeting was held in Idaho Falls Monday night addressing the details of the project. Supporters argued that they look forward to having more jobs and energy options. Opponents claim the world needs less nuclear energy. If federal officials approve the project, construction could bring nearly 1,000 jobs, with 500 salaried workers once the project is completed. Areva officials hope to have the go-ahead by the end of the year.
