(NEW YORK) — Lady Gaga is going from the Monster Ball to the ball drop. New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has selected Gaga to be the one to push the super-fancy Waterford Crystal button, which will drop the famous ball in Times Square at 11:59 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
Gaga was set to be there anyway — she’s performing live from Times Square on ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.
Each year, the New York City mayor selects a special guest to help him drop the ball and do the final countdown to the New Year. Past button pushers have included Bill and Hillary Clinton and Muhammad Ali.
Speaking to reporters about the selection of Lady Gaga on Wednesday, Mayor Bloomberg said he had never met the star, but had once seen her perform at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. He added, “I think she’s a good entertainer. The one time I saw her, she was a great entertainer.”
