Cincinnati has acquired starting pitcher Matt Latos from the San Diego Padres in exchange for first baseman Yonder Alonso, catcher Yasmani Grandal, and pitchers Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger.

Latos went 9-14 last season with a 3.47 ERA. He struck out 185 hitters in over 194.1 innings of work. ESPN Baseball Insider Jim Bowden says the trade is a risky one for the Reds.

“He has [had] some shoulder problems in the past,” Bowden said of Latos. “In fact, two years ago, he had to get shut down in August and September because his arm was tired.”

The 23 year old will join a rotation that includes Johnny Cueto, Bronson Arroyo, Mike Leake and Homer Bailey.

It will be interesting to see how Latos adjusts, going from pitcher friendly Petco Park to home run haven Great American Ballpark.
