iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Bad news for new Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer. The NCAA has handed down additional penalties to Ohio State, including a one-year bowl ban, probation and loss of scholarships, stemming from an extra benefits scandal in which players received cash and free tattoos.

“Urban Meyer says he received no assurances that there would not be additional penalties,” ESPN college football insider Joe Schad said. “He did do his research. He did believe that it was likely that the school was not going to be hammered to an extent that he wouldn’t want to take the job.”

Former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel, who knew about the violations but failed to act, will receive a five-year “show-cause” order. He’s currently working for the Indianapolis Colts as a video-review coordinator.
