An an executive council of baseball’s owners agreed to give Selig a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season.

The extension was approved unanimously, and it’s easy to see why. Selig has been the commissioner of Major League Baseball since 1992 and during that time, baseball has grown in popularity as well as financially. Since 1995 following the strike-shortened season in 1994, baseball’s revenue was $1.4 billion, and now it stands at over $7 billion following the 2011 season. That is a 400% overall increase in revenue. There has not been a dip in revenue other than the 2002 season (-2.7%).

Along with that, attendance figures have grown over the years, he has implemented a stronger drug testing program, and has integrated revenue sharing so that small market teams can remain competitive.

It hasn’t all been great for Selig though, as some of his decisions have garnered criticism over the years. Those include the All-Star game tie, giving home-field advantage in the World Series to the winning team of the All-Star game, the steroid era, and the cancelled World Series in 1994.
