But that journey will now be over after Counsell announced his retirement on Tuesday.

He’ll begin his next one, his original dream.

“When I was 19 I met Sandy Alderson in college, he was the GM of the Oakland A’s at the time,” said Counsell during his press conference.  “For me, it was like, ‘Well, that’s what I’m going to do when I grow up. I’m going to be a GM. That’s what I want to do. I want to do what Sandy Alderson does.’”

The 41-year old Counsell won’t jump right to general manager but he will be the special assistant to Brewers general manager Doug Melvin.

Counsell spent his last five seasons in Milwaukee but made stops during his 15 seasons with the Colorado Rockies, Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks, winning World Series with the Marlins in 1997 and Diamondbacks in 2001.
