Feds Order Closure of Lucky Friday Mine

(COEUR D’ALENE) – Hecla Mining officials say about 200 miners will lose their jobs at the Lucky Friday mine in northern Idaho. Federal safety inspectors have ordered the mine closed after determining that debris and other materials needed to be removed. The mine has been shuttered since last month when a rock burst injured seven miners. Two miners were also killed at the site last year. Additionally, the closure caused the stock price for Hecla Mining to lose a quarter of its value Wednesday. Officials hope to hire most of the miners back when operations resume in 2013.
