Rangers’ Tortorella Fined $30,000 for Post-Classic Comments
Published at(NEW YORK) — Despite winning the NHL’s annual Winter Classic, New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella made some very critical comments about the game’s officiating. As a result, he’s a little lighter in his wallet. After the team’s 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, Tortorella wondered aloud if some the NHL and NBC were conspiring to take the game into overtime. For his comments, Tortorella has been fined $30,000.
“There is no acceptable explanation or excuse for commentary challenging the integrity of the League, its officials, or its broadcast partners,” said NHL Senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell.
“I tainted the Winter Classic with my mouth and I shouldn’t have,” Tortorella said. “So I apologize to everyone involved.”
Tortorella also admitted that he had met with Campbell and the two plan to meet again.
