Reds Sign Closer Ryan Madson

Rob Carr/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — It was only a matter of time before Ryan Madson found a team to pitch for next season, only he didn’t get the big contract he was seeking all winter. According to ESPN, the Cincinnati Reds have signed former Philadelphia Phillies closer Ryan Madson to a one-year $8.5 million deal.
The 31-year old Madson had spent his entire eight-year career with the Phillies, primarily as a reliever, but because of injuries, last season was his first year as a full-time closer. He went 4-2 with a 2.37 ERA, and saved 32 out of 34 games for Philadelphia.
Madson will replace Francisco Cordero as the team’s closer, and will join a Reds team that after winning the NL Central division in 2010, won just 79 games last season and missed the playoffs.
