David Axelrod tweeted a photo of the president in the backseat of a vehicle, peering out the window alongside first dog Bo.  The caption accompanying the photo was, “How loving owners transport their dogs.”

This unsolicited advice is likely in reference to the infamous story — as first reported by the Boston Globe — about a family trip Romney took more than 25 years ago in which he transported his dog in a much different way.

During the former Massachusetts governor’s 2008 run for the presidency, it came out that many years before, he transported the Romney clan from Boston to Ontario, Canada, with the family dog in a carrier tied to the roof.

Coincidentally, the Obama campaign launched a Facebook page called Pet Lovers for Obama on the same day as Axelrod’s tweet.  The community page features a magnet with Bo’s photo saying, “I bark for Barack.”  It invites supporters to submit photos of their pets in Obama 2012 gear.
