Tigers’ officials said on Tuesday that Martinez tore his left ACL last week.  The 33-year-old went for an MRI on Monday which revealed the tear.

He will go for an evaluation again next week, but sources say the team expects Martinez to need surgery from which it will take the entire season to recover.

“After you feel sorry for yourself for a day or so, you move on,” general manager Dave Dombrowski said. “We have a good club. We’ve got a lot of players who will step up.”

Martinez hit .330 with 103 RBIs in 2011. He signed a $50 million, four-year contract before last season.
