West Virginia Sets Records in 70-33 Orange Bowl Win over Clemson
Published at(MIAMI) — Last Thursday during the Valero Alamo Bowl, Baylor set a bowl game record after scoring 67 points in their victory against Washington. But records, as they say, are meant to be broken. During the Discovery Orange Bowl, West Virginia defeated Clemson 70-33.
That wasn’t the only feat by West Virginia in their dominating win. According to ESPN Stats and Information, the game broke the following bowl records: Most team touchdowns (10), most points in a quarter (35 in the first quarter), most points in a half (49), tied for most passing touchdowns (quarterback Geno Smith threw six), most individual points responsible for (42 for Smith), and Tavon Austin tied a bowl record with four receiving touchdowns.
“You don’t score 70 points by being good on offense,” West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen said after the game. “You score 70 points by being good on all three sides of the ball.”
This was Holgorsen’s first season with West Virginia, and led the team to a 10-3 record this season.
