(SHANGHAI) — Former Houston Rockets center Yao Ming is making the most of free time since he retired from the NBA last July. The former all-star seems to have found his new career…in politics.
Yao has become a member of an advisory board to Shanghai’s legislature. While the committee doesn’t hold much true power, The China Daily reports that Yao is supposed to regularly attend meetings, and may also make suggestions for the board and government departments.
“There are about 142 members in the group, and Yao is the youngest,” Kong Rong, who works in the service office of committee, told the China Daly.
The 31-year old Ming played eight seasons in the NBA, all with Houston. He was forced to retire due to various foot injuries.
