(OAKLAND, Calif.) — The Oakland Athletics have agreed to a four-year contract worth $36 million with Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes. He will earn $6.5 million this season, $8.5 million next year and $10.5 million in 2014 and 2015.
The 26-year-old outfielder played for Cuba in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, batting .458 in six games.
Cespedes played eight seasons in Cuba, where he belted a record 33 homers in 2011.
