Eli Gets Best of Patriots, Again

Elsa/Getty Images(INDIANAPOLIS) — Eli Manning beat the Patriots in Super Bowl 42 with a final drive on their last possession and did it again in Super Bowl 46. Manning won his second title, passing Indianapolis Colts QB and big brother Peyton in his own house, taking home his second MVP title after the Giants 21-17 win on Sunday.
“The story is the New York Giants are World Champions, that’s what I’m proud of, that’s all that matters, that’s all,” said Manning. “The only important thing is for this organization, the Giants, these guys that are on this team, the coaches, an opportunity to say we are the World Champions, that’s the story.”
As Super Bowl 42 hero David Tyree watched from the sidelines, this time the big catch came from Mario Manningham who gained 38 yards and put the Giants at midfield during their final 88-yard touchdown drive.
“It gives you confidence; knowing how the crowd was going to react or what the coaches was going to call the next play,” said Manningham. “It gives you confidence as a team and as a player.”
Ahmad Bradshaw fell into the end zone with 57 seconds left to give the Giants the lead. Then it came down to stopping New England. Tom Coughlin stressed all week long that this Giants team was trying to make their own history.
“This team, making history for themselves not to be compared any further with the 07-08 team, although we’re very proud of the 07-08 team, don’t get me wrong,” said Coughlin. “I thought for these guys, so many newcomers, so many veteran guys that had never been in a Super Bowl, that this would be a wonderful thing if they could carve their own history.”
The Patriots had their own shot at creating some new Super Bowl history on the final Hail Mary into the end zone, but the ball was batted down to give New York their second Super Bowl win over the Pats in four years.
“That’s what it comes down to in football, it’s one play. Certainly, you look at our game four years ago, it was a miracle play that they make and today we had a chance to make one of those and didn’t come up with it,” said Tom Brady. “It always comes down to one or two plays in this game and if you make it you’re celebrating and if you don’t, you don’t sleep for a week.”
