Victoria Bekiempis, food writer for The Village Voice, has taken the Chinese food pledge, vowing to eat it every day for the next year.

Currently on Day 42 of her pledge, Bekiempis is chronicling her experience in her food blog, Year of the Takeout.  There, you can see images of her selections, such as scallion pancakes or vegetable dumplings, along with the name of the restaurant.

Bekiempis is on her way to finding some fantastic restaurants in her expedition, and she shares these insights in her blog:  “While the dumplings in this $6 offering weren’t stellar — they were great, but there was nothing crazy-special-unique-zomg! except the dough, which had a beautifully buttery vibe — the broth made the pick a true winner, ” she wrote about M Noodle Shop’s vegetable dumpling soup.

While Chinese menus boast many healthy options, like steamed tofu and vegetables, other items can be loaded with salt and fat.  Chicken lo mein can carry up to 1,000 calories, depending how it’s made, and fried egg rolls can sometimes house 12 grams of fat.
