(NEW YORK) — The New York Knicks announced the signing of guard J.R. Smith Friday. To make room for Smith, the Knicks released forward Renaldo Balkman.
Smith will be reunited with Knicks star Carmelo Anthony whom he played with in Denver for four and a half years. For the past couple months Smith has been playing in China.
Through his seven year career, the 26-year old Smith has averaged 12.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
Smith is expected to join the team Saturday night, but not in time for practice. Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni says he will not play Smith until he practices which means he won’t play against the Mavericks on Sunday.
The terms of Smith’s contract were not released, but the Knicks were able to offer Smith a pro-rated share of their $2.5 million mini mid-level exception and a player option for a second year.
