Gagner finished the evening with eight points, four goals and four assists, tying Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey for the franchise record for points in a game.

“I think this is a joke,” Gagner said. “I can’t really explain it. It’s just one of those things where everything I touched seemed to go in. I haven’t really been part of anything like that before, so it feels pretty good.”

It is the first time since Mario Lemieux did it in 1988 that any player scored eight points in a game.

The league record, 10 points, was set by former Toronto Maple Leaf Darryl Sittler.
