The 34-year-old Williams — who retired once before in 2004 — didn’t rule out that he was officially going to stay retired, and said he would pick up a phone if someone came calling.

But for now, Williams is hanging up his spikes after playing 11 seasons in the NFL.

“It’s been a long process, I think people from the outside just say, ‘Oh he went through all these things and all these troubles’ but it’s gotten me to this point where I have clarity about my future,” Williams told Mike and Mike this morning.

Williams’ new passion will be his charity and said that football limited him at certain points during his life.  He’ll be on a new journey now and has already gotten permission from his wife.

“If I could be doing anything in the whole entire world, the answer was, I’d be traveling around the world and taking classes because I love to learn,” said Williams. “I asked myself if I would be able to do that now and I talked to my wife and she said she’d give me permission. I looked at my bank account and I had enough money to do it.  So I said, ‘Huh. That’s what I’m going to be able to do.'”

For teams that may be in need of a backup running back, Williams said they’ll have to call long distance to reach him for now.

Williams started with the New Orleans Saints in 1999, followed by two stints with the Miami Dolphins. His final stop was in Baltimore with the Ravens.
