‘Waiting to Exhale’ Sequel Will ‘Soldier On’ Without Whitney Houston

Jason Merritt/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Whitney Houston’s death has not deterred the producers of the Waiting to Exhale sequel from moving forward with the project.
Speaking with New York magazine, the president of Fox 2000 Pictures, Elizabeth Gabler, said she doesn’t think Houston “would want it” to be cancelled. Gabler continues, “It’s almost in her honor that we think to soldier on.”
Gabler says “it isn’t inconceivable” that Oprah Winfrey could take Houston’s place in the sequel, since she welcomed the cast of the original film onto her talk show when it was released in 1995. But Gabler makes clear that the studio has, “not talked about anybody for that part. Forest [Whitaker], I know, is just…grieving. He’d been the one who was speaking with her, updating [Houston] on its progress.”
Waiting to Exhale, directed by Whitaker, starred Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett. Like the original, the sequel will be based on a Terry McMillan book — in this case, Getting to Happy.
New York magazine also points out that a script to a remake of Whitney’s 1992 hit film The Bodyguard has been written. The film spawned one of Houston’s biggest hits, “I Will Always Love You.”
