After 18 seasons already with the team, third baseman Chipper Jones has announced that he will retire after the upcoming 2012 season.

The 39-year old baseman has played his entire career with the Braves after the team drafted him as the number one overall pick in the 1990 MLB Amateur draft. He was an integral part of a Braves era that saw them win 14 consecutive division titles and a World Series championship in 1995.

Even though he will go down as one of the greatest switch-hitters of all time, injuries have derailed Jones in recent seasons. He has missed at least 25 games in seven of the past eight seasons, but when he played he did so at a high level, including a National League batting title during the 2008 season.

Jones’ 454 career home runs ranks third all-time among switch hitters and his .316 career batting average ranks second all-time among switch hitters.
