‘Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax’ Tops Box Office with $70 Million Debut
Published at(NEW YORK) — Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax chopped the box office competition down to size over the weekend, earning an estimated $70.7 million during what was the most successful debut of any film so far this year.
Once the final box office figures are released on Monday, The Lorax could also set a record for the best opening ever for a non-sequel animated film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Incredibles pulled in $70.5 million during its debut weekend in 2004.
The comedy Project X premiered in second place over the weekend, earning $20.8 million. Last week’s box office champ, Act of Valor, rounded out the top three, with $13.7 million.
On the heels of its best-picture win at the Oscars, The Artist climbed into the top 10, with $3.9 million.
