NBA? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1331413544231National Basketball Association(NEW YORK) — After finally making his NBA debut this season, Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio’s first NBA will be cut short. ESPN is reporting the Rubio suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.

Rubio suffered the injury in the team’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers Friday night. With just 16 seconds left in the game, Rubio suffered the injury while trying to defend Lakers guard Kobe Bryant.

This is a devastating blow to a Timberwolves team that is fighting to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2003-2004 season. Rubio helped reenergize a Timberwolves franchise that had lost 132 games over the past two seasons. The 21-year old Spaniard was drafted fifth overall by Minnesota in the 2009 NBA draft, but decided to stay overseas until this season.

In 41 games Rubio was averaging 10.6 points and 8.2 assists per game for the Timberwolves. Rubio will also now be unable to participate in this summer’s Olympic games.
