On Friday, Gingrich told a crowd at a campaign stop in Gulfport that Leon Panetta should resign.

“I have been told that the secretary of defense has suggested that international agreements override the Congress. If he believes that, he should resign tonight,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich was referring to Panetta’s comments at a congressional hearing in which he said the “goal would be to seek international permission” before intervening in Syria. The Pentagon said Panetta’s comments were misinterpreted.

“Secretary Panetta appeared before the Senate this week to have direct dialogue with Congress about the military options in regards to the crisis in Syria. He believes those discussions should and will continue,” said Pentagon press secretary George Little. “As Secretary Panetta told Congress, the president has the authority under the Constitution to act to defend this country. He emphasized throughout his testimony that working with an international coalition is the most pragmatic option given the wide array of serious challenges presented by the Syria crisis.”

“Let me be clear: Leon Panetta needs to learn we do not have a United Nations secretary of defense. We have a United States secretary of defense,” Gingrich said. “I think it tells you everything you need to know about how radical this administration is.”

While campaigning Gingrich has called for the firing of U.S. Ambassador Howard Gutman, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernake, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Attorney General Eric Holder, Energy Secretary Steven Chu and not to be forgotten, all of President  Obama’s White House czars.
