(FORT MYERS, FL) — Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek announced his retirement at the Red Sox Spring Training home, Jet Blue Park, in Fort Myers, Florida Thursday night.
Varitek played 15-seasons for the Sox, and was part of two World Series Championship teams, including the team that broke the Redsox’s 86-year championship drought.
The 39-year old captain fought back tears as he spoke.
“The hardest thing to do is to walk away from your teammates and what they’ve meant to you over the years,” Varitek said.
Varitek finishes his career with 193 homers and has the distinction of being the only catcher to catch four no-hitters.
