‘John Carter,’ ‘Silent House,’ ‘A Thousand Words’ Open Friday

John Carter: In Disney’s action-adventure film, a former Civil War veteran is transported to Mars, where he becomes entangled in a major conflict among the planet’s people.  Friday Night Lights actor Taylor Kitsch plays the title character.  Willem Dafoe, Lynn Collins and Thomas Haden Church also star in the film, which is based on a novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs and is screening in 3D.  Rated PG-13.

Silent House: Elizabeth Olsen plays a woman trapped inside her family’s isolated lake house.  Rated R.

A Thousand Words: Eddie Murphy is a literary agent who learns that he moves one step closer to dying every time a leaf falls off a magical tree in his backyard.  Once the tree loses all of its leaves, Murphy’s Jack McCall will lose his life.  Kerry Washington and Allison Janney also star.  Rated PG-13.
