Originally, Humphries, a basketball player who makes $8 million per year, planned to be represented by his Minnesota lawyer. Even so, according to California law, an out-of-state lawyer must have an attorney licensed in California present in court. So when Kris’ L.A.-based co-counsel dropped the case, Humphries’ Minnesota lawyer was left without a sponsor and therefore couldn’t represent Humphries.

The New Jersey Nets player will now reportedly be going it alone against expert divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who has represented celebrities including Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears and Stevie Wonder.

Kardashian filed for divorce on Oct. 31, 2011, after only 72 days of marriage to Humphries. Their wedding was televised in a two-part E! reality special.
