Mets’ Ike Davis Being Treated For Valley Fever

Al Bello/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The New York Mets just can’t catch a break. After missing 126 games last season with an ankle injury, this was the season first baseman Ike Davis was supposed to help carry the load on offense left vacant by the recently departed Jose Reyes. That may be in jeopardy as the team has diagnosed Davis with Valley Fever.
Valley Fever is a fungal disease that is common in the southwestern United States and northeastern Mexico, Davis lives in Arizona. The disease has symptoms that range from fevers and coughs to rashes and joint aches. What is worrisome for Davis, is that the severity of the symptoms can range from easily manageable to potentially life threatening. Despite his diagnosis, Davis is confident it’s nothing to worry about.
“It’s been the same,” Davis told ESPN New York beat reporter Adam Rubin. “Seriously, I feel great. And I don’t have any symptoms of it. I’m not coughing. I’m not throwing up blood. I’m not doing anything. It’s not even hard to breathe. The doctor said I could play, and just don’t get really, really fatigued. So that’s what we’re doing.”
In 36 games last season, the 24-year old Davis batted .302 with seven home runs, while driving in 25 runs.
