San Diego has agreed to a five-year contract with center fielder Cameron Maybin worth $25 million. The deal also includes a club option for a sixth year.

Maybin was acquired by the team in a trade with the Florida Marlins in December of 2010. Maybin had struggled in his previous four seasons and had failed to live up the large expectations placed on him after he was drafted tenth overall by the Detroit Tigers in the 2005 MLB Draft. Maybin though, showed flashes of the kind of big-time player scouts believed he would be at the Major League level in 2011.

“Cameron has certainly emerged as a core player,” Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said in a statement.”During his time with the Padres, he has impressed us with his play and within his character. He has shown us that he is committed to the Padres, and we are happy to secure his rights through 2017.”

In 2011, Maybin set career highs in runs (82), hits (136), home runs (nine), RBIs (40), and steals (40).
