The newly signed closer will miss the entire 2012 season because he will need to undergo Tommy John surgery because of a torn ligament in his right elbow.

Madson signed a one-year contract over the summer with the Reds, guaranteeing him $8.5 million. Madson spent the previous nine seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies serving as a reliever and closer. The Reds signed Madson to replace former closer Francisco Codero after he saved 32 games with a 2.37 ERA for Philadelphia last season.

Madson had reported some elbow discomfort at the start of spring training, but had insisted it was normal and nothing to worry about.

“We’ve talked to the team. We all have to stay positive,” Reds general manager Walty Jocketty said. “We have alternatives internally that we will sort through in the next few days.”

Even though the team has announced who will replace Madson as the team’s closer, Sean Marshall is expected to step into Madson’s role as closer.
