Rory McIlroy Wins Honda Classic, Now Ranked No. 1 in the World
Published at(PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.) — After shooting a 69 in the final round, Rory McIlroy won the Honda Classic, and is also now the number one ranked golfer in the world.
Even though it looked like McIlroy would breeze through the final round without much of a challenge, none other than Tiger Woods stormed back to shoot a 62 on the final day of the event to finish just two strokes behind McIlroy. Woods’ 62 was his lowest final round ever in his professional career. The day belonged to McIlroy though, as he finished on 12-under 268, and also earned his fifth career victory.
“It was tough today, especially seeing Tiger made a charge,” McIlroy said. I knew par golf would probably be good enough. To shoot 1 under in these conditions, when you go into the round with the lead, is very nice. And I was just able to get the job done.”
At 22-years old, he is also the second-youngest player to reach the number one ranking. Woods was just 21-years old when he was named the number one ranked golfer after winning the 1997 U.S. Open.
