Syrian Deputy Oil Minister Defects, Says He’s ‘Joining the Revolution’

Alessio Romenzi/AFP/Getty Images(BEIRUT) — The first high ranking Syrian official — civilian or military — has defected from the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
In a video posted on YouTube, Deputy Oil Minister Abdo Hussameddin said the Assad regime has sent the country to the brink and that he is “joining the revolution of the people who reject injustice and the brutal campaign of the regime.”
Hussameddin added that he didn’t want to end his career serving a criminal regime.
