McDonald’s still sits comfortably on its throne with $34.2 billion in sales last year, but for the first time since the late Dave Thomas opened his first Wendy’s in 1969, that hamburger chain edged out former runner-up Burger King in the U.S.

In 2011, Wendy’s rang up $8.5 billion at the cash register compared to $8.4 billion for Burger King.

As far as the overall ranking of restaurant chains in the U.S. is concerned, Wendy’s and Burger King are four and five, with Subway and Starbucks sitting in the second and third spots respectively.

Burger King still has more restaurants outside the country so worldwide, it ranks second behind McDonald’s internationally.
