Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Adam McKay said Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner are finalizing their contracts.  He added that he’s also reached out to Christina Applegate’s manager.

“[W]e have an idea for her that we think is pretty cool.  So tentatively right now she’s in,” he elaborated.

As for the plot of the film, McKay said, “We have a basic idea.  I’ll tell you we’re staying roughly period, and I would just say it’s the next stage in the development of American media and news.  The fun of these characters is they confront change very poorly.”

McKay says the sequel will tentatively begin shooting next January or February, and that it could hit theaters as early as Christmas 2013.

Ferrell announced the sequel in character as Ron Burgundy last month during an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s TBS late-night show.
