The pop musician and his partner, Karina Smirnoff, lost the first “dance duel” of the season to Jaleel White and Kym Johnson. Because they were in the bottom two, each couple was forced to simultaneously dance the cha cha cha to the Lady Gaga hit “The Edge of Glory.”

The judges were complimentary of both celebrities, but in a unanimous vote, they saved White over DeGraw.

Afterward, DeGraw said he had a great mentor in Smirnoff and added that his experience in the ballroom was “awesome.”

DeGraw was the lowest-scoring celebrity on this week’s Latin-flavored performance show, with judge Len Goodman telling him his samba was more like a “shamba.”

DeGraw had been in the bottom two twice prior to Tuesday night.

The musical guests on the results show were Train, who performed their latest hit “Drive By,” and Selena Gomez, who delivered a live rendition of her single “Hit the Lights.”

Next Monday night on Dancing with the Stars, the eight remaining celebrities will dance to live performances by Motown artists including The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and Martha Reeves.
