ESPN: Quarterback Matt Leinart to Visit Raiders, Likely Sign Contract
Published at(NEW YORK) — Free agent quarterback Matt Leinart might be playing in California again, just like he did in college. ESPN is reporting that Leinart will visit the Oakland Raiders next week and is expected to sign with the team.
If signed, Leinart is expected to serve as the backup to Carson Palmer. What would make this signing even more intriguing is that Like Palmer, Leinart is a former Heisman Trophy Award winner from USC. Leinart took over for Palmer after he was drafted in 2004 by the Cincinnati Bengals. Leinart would also be reunited with former offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, who used to coach Leinart when he was with the Houston Texans.
Even though the Raiders used a third-round supplemental draft pick on quarterback Terrelle Pryor this past season, he is still a project and would be the team’s third-string quarterback.
