Hellickson struck out four and only allowed three hits through 8 2/3 innings.  Fernando Rodney got the final out of the game and matched the Rays best start to a season.  Hellickson was celebrating his 25th birthday as well.

“That was a good birthday present,” Hellickson said. “It’s always nice to get off to a good start against these guys in our division. We came out and played hard and got three good wins.”

The Yankees are now 0-3 for the first time in 14 years.  Carlos Pena homered for the second time this season in the third inning and now has seven RBI’s to start the year.

“At times, it seems magnified when it’s the beginning of the year,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “We’ve all been through three-game losing streaks. This is a resilient club. We’ll be fine.”
