Slugging first baseman Ryan Howard has been given the OK to resume baseball activities after recovering from a ruptured Achilles last October.

Howard flew to Clearwater, Florida today to step up his rehab and begin the process of making his way back to the field. He will start off fielding ground balls and throwing. If all goes well, he’ll start swinging a bat again, something he hasn’t done in over two months. While there is no timetable for Howard’s return, this is the a big step in the right direction.

Howard is a key offensive member of the Phillies. He hit 33 home runs last season which was the sixth-most in National League, and he drove in 116 runs, which was third-best in the National League. Howard suffered the injury in the team’s final at-bat during their Game 5 Wildcard playoff loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Phillies are off to a 10-12 start and rank 27th in runs scored.
