After the Rays were outscored 31-11 by Boston in their previous three games, Shields allowed just four singles.

The game’s only run came with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, when Red Sox starter Daniel Bard walked Rays third baseman Evan Longoria on four pitches.

Before the game, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine apologized to third baseman Kevin Youkilis for comments he made to WHDH-TV in which he said he didn’t think the three-time All-Star was “as physically or emotionally into the game.”
