(NEW YORK) — News on corporate earnings helped the markets overall Tuesday, although the Nasdaq closed in the minus column.
The Dow gained 75 points, and the S&P added five. The Nasdaq failed to gain any ground and posted a nine-point loss Tuesday.
AT&T and 3M led the Dow higher all session long, after posting better-than-expected profits before the markets opened Tuesday. The telecommunications giant and the manufacturer 3M rose 3.6 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively. Hershey also beat expectations, climbing six percent.
Gas prices are up, while home prices are down. But overall, feelings about the economy are satisfactory. The Conference Board, a private research group, says its consumer confidence index is down just slightly this month from March.
