Tigers ace Justin Verlander pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out seven as Detroit tamed the Boston Red Sox, 3-2.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the top of the ninth inning, when closer Jose Valverde blew the save.  But it was outfielder Austin Jackson to the rescue in the bottom of the frame when he singled home the winning run off of Red Sox reliever Alfredo Aceves.

Valverde’s blown save is his first in his last 52 chances.
