A cleaning crew found splashes of blood Thursday in the Orange County apartment Shazer Fernando Limas, 31, had recently vacated. Apartment management called police, who responded to the scene and spent the day looking for Limas, his girlfriend, Arlet Hernandez Contreras, 31, and their two young sons, who were 4 months old and 2 years old.

“Based on what we’ve seen at the apartment, we believe there was an altercation inside,” Sgt. Dan Adams of the Orange County Police Department told ABC News.

Police believe the victims were murdered three weeks ago. From what was left at the scene, police can’t tell whether the victims were shot, stabbed or beaten.

When investigators caught up with Limas in Santa Ana, Calif., Thursday evening, he led them on a freeway chase heading south. He was apprehended near the San Clemente Border Patrol checkpoint after police threw a spike strip at his tires, Adams said.

Limas was arrested for felony evasion and was transported to the Orange County Jail. Murder charges were handed down Friday based on Limas’ statements to investigators, Adams said.

Authorities searched the Brea landfill, where the family’s trash would have been taken, early Friday. That search turned up empty, Adams said

Investigators said they had not determined a motive in the murders and plan to expand their search for the bodies to neighboring counties.
