Dugout Dick’s Caves Filled By The BLM

(SALMON) – The caves carved out by a well-known central Idaho recluse more than six decades ago have been filled in with dirt and lava rock. The caves were the former home of Richard “Dugout Dick” Zimmerman, who died in April 2010. Zimmerman, who had lived in dugouts since 1947, entered an agreement with the BLM to live on public land, with the feds taking over his property after his death. Officials say the caves posed a safety hazard.
