(NEW YORK) — The New York Yankees were reportedly up for sale for potentially as much as $3 billion, according to the New York Daily News Thursday.
Still, Yankees part-owner Hal Steinbrenner denied those rumors.
“I just learned of the Daily News story,” Steinbrenner said in a statement Thursday. “It is pure fiction. The Yankees are not for sale. I expect that the Yankees will be in my family for many years to come.”
Hal’s father, the late George Steinbrenner purchased the club for $8.8 million in 1973 and the Steinbrenner family has brought seven World Series titles to New York since.
Last year, according to Forbes, the New York Yankees were the third-most valuable sports franchise.
