The sticking point seems to be the so-called “5+1” group’s demand that no sanctions can begin to be lifted until Iran lowers its enrichment of uranium — a crucial step in developing a nuclear arsenal.

Tehran says it won’t consider that step unless trade and diplomatic penalties imposed since 2006 are removed, so therein lies the stalemate between Iran on one side and the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany on the other.

Still, time might favor U.S. and its allies since Iran does not want to see the European Union embargo on its oil exports to go through as scheduled on July 11.  The next talks are set for June 18 and 19.
