Suggs, last year’s Defensive Player of the Year, told ESPN he partially tore his Achilles while running a conditioning drill at his former high school in Chandler, Ariz. In a text sent to ESPN, the 29-year-old linebacker said he will meet with a surgical specialist on Tuesday and expects to recover in four to six months. Suggs denied an earlier report that he injured himself playing basketball.

“I’ve never had a real bad injury before — sometimes you have to go through something like this to make you better,” Suggs told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols in a telephone interview.

The Ravens have not yet seen the results of Suggs’ MRI, according to ESPN.

Suggs’ 25 sacks since 2011 is the fifth most in the league over the last two seasons.
