GETTY B 102511 WallStreetStock? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1338500105852Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Stocks spent the last day of May moving between moderate losses and gains.

At the end of what was the worst month for the Dow in about two years, the index Thursday closed down 26.41 points at 12,393.45. The Nasdaq lost 10.02 points, closing at 2,827.34, and the S&P gave up 2.99 points to close at 1,310.33.

Facebook had its best one-day gain as a publicly traded company. The social network’s shares climbed to $29.60, but the price is still well below its $38-a-share initial public offering on May 18.

Gas prices have coming down in recent weeks as the price of oil continues its month-long slide.  Crude fell to $86.51 a barrel — the cheapest it’s been all year — before closing up about 10 cents.
