According to local officials, a suicide bomber targeted NATO forces who were just concluding a meeting with a district chief in the province of Uruzgan.

Witnesses said the explosion left two Western troops dead and wounded four others.  There were also a number of civilians injured in the blast including children.

Uruzgan is one of the provinces where the Afghan army and police are expected to assume security responsibilities well before U.S. and its NATO allies withdraw from Afghanistan sometime in 2014.

To date, more than 3,000 coalition troops have died in the 10-year-long war, with the U.S. sustaining two-thirds of the fatalities.
